Mother's day has just passed and yet here I sit posting a devotion concerning what God considers the traits of a holy and honorable woman. In fact, a whole chapter in the book of Proverbs is devoted to the traits of such a woman. Perhaps we have this enriching chapter to assist women everywhere to strive for these standards of excellence that surely touch the heart of God.
Why am I writing about this now? What is my inspiration you ask? Her name is Carmon Perry and tonight she has entered into the presence of Jesus. She is my wife's grandmother and for the past 21 years I have been priviledged to have her as a part of my life. Tonight, one verse in Proverbs chapter 31 keeps echoing in my mind. It's verse 10.
"Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies."
"Rubies?" you ask? "Why rubies?" You may be saying, "I always heard that diamonds were a girl's best friend, not rubies!" O' but how thankful I am that God had the writer of Proverbs to compare a holy, honorable woman to rubies and not diamonds.
You see, all a diamond does is reflect the light. O’ it sparkles, it glistens, but it is simply reflecting the light on its surface. Not rubies, friends, a ruby doesn’t reflect light, it absorbs light and then it gives off a subtle, gentle glow!
God doesn't want a bunch of diamonds walking around. He doesn't want shallow, surface only followers. He wants all of us, not just the women, to have a glow that comes from down deep in our souls.
Now, don't misunderstand the source of the glow.
John 1:4 says, “In Him (in Jesus) was life, and the life was the light of men.” John 8: 12, “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
Jesus is the light, the source of the glow. That is how it was with Grandmother Carmon, she gave off a subtle, gentle glow because she was filled with Jesus. She loved Him and served Him faithfully. And that is how it is with this woman described in Proverbs 31.
Friend, are you glowing? Have you saturated your heart with Jesus? Place your faith in Him today. Commune with Him in prayer. Let Him speak to you through His Word and then apply that to your daily walk. Absorb yourself in Jesus and you will begin to glow!
